William J. Granger (1840-1898)
- We have located the obituary for William J. Granger via the Jasper County Public
Library. He was born in Mason County Michigan on November 11, 1840, and while a
young man, moved to Indiana with his family. He did in fact serve with Company A,
73rd Indiana Inf. Vol. Thus, the memorial is correct. His father's name was Harmon
and his mother was Sarah Jane (Vanderlip) Granger.
The Sampsons also fowarded a copy of the following obituary from the Feb. 11, 1898, Rensselaer semi-weekly Republican (page 8):
- William J. Granger was born in Mason County, Michigan, Nov. 11, 1840, and died in DeMotte, Ind., Feb. 4, 1898. When still a child he removed with his parents to Indiana.
When a young man he united with the Baptist church and was baptised by Elder Brayton at Eagle Creek where his membership remained until his death. In 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army in the 73, Regt., Co. "A," Ind. Inf. Vol. Serving in the same until the close of the war. In 1867 was married to Lucy McAllister of Kankakee, Ill., by whom 9 children were born. His wife, 4 sons and 2 daughters survive him.
