Monday night at the regular meeting of American legion Post 101, the members enjoyed the presence of four Lowell boys, Staff Sergt. Mell Jones, Jr., Lieut. Dale Goings, Pvt. Ernest Wilson and Pvt. Robert Potter, all of whom were home on furlough from various branches of the service. Memories of World War I were brought back to Legion members as the four boys told of their experiences in the present conflict.Staff Sergt. Mell Jones, Jr., who just recently returned from England where he served as flight leader of his bombing crew, related some interesting phases of his trips over the continent, which he described as a thrilling experience.
"I was always lucky enough to get back home," he said, "but not all of my buddies were so fortunate. If people only knew what was going on over there," he concluded, "they would put their shoulder to the wheel a little harder. There's a war to be won, and it takes more than just the men in service to do the job-the people at home have an equal responsibility."
In connection with the regular meeting, the name of Pvt.Leonard Storey, of DeMotte, who has been missing in action in the North African sector since November 1st, was added to the roll as honorary member of Lowell Post 101.
On behalf of the entire membership, Commander F.W. Minninger, thanked the Post's four honored guests for appearing at the meeting and wished them a safe and speedy return from the present conflict.
Here Visiting Parents
Staff Sergt. Mell Jones, Jr., arrived home last Thursday for a ten day visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mell Jones, Sr. He has just returned from overseas duty in the air corps, of which he is crew chief of his division. He expects to be in the U. S. for some time before returning overseas.This January 6, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 2:
- A card was received by Mr. and Mrs. Mell Jones from their son, Master Sgt. Mell Jones, Jr., stationed somewhere in England.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the October 4, 1945, issue (page 2, column 1):
- M/Sgt. Mell Jones, Jr., has arrived home following his honorable discharge from the service. He served three years in England and France.
