Writes from Post in Trinidad
Serving with the U.S. forces in Trinidad, Cpl. Jack McCann writes his parents that he is getting along fine. He says he ran across Junior Singleton from Cedar Lake at the camp recently. Both the boys are well.This February 3, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, columns 1-2:
- A letter received by the Harold McCanns from their son, Sgt. Jack McCann informs his parents that he is getting along fine. He stated that Feb. 26th will mark the end of his second year in the tropics, and although he supposed he would freeze in the cold weather he would run into when he comes home, he would be so glad to get back he wouldn't care if snow was up to his neck. He thought the censor officer would agree with him, too, as he was also a Hoosier. He also said he received his Christmas package and a copy of the Tribune, and that he and Singleton, a son of the Fred Singletons, of Cedar Lake, read the paper over at least ten times.
The following June 29, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
Home from Overseas
Sgt. Jack McCann, who has served with the U.S. forces overseas the past 30 months, arrived home last Thursday for a 15-day furlough with his father, Harold McCann, and wife. Jack, a radio technician in the air corps, likes his work very much but says the good Old U.S.A. suits him better. He was stationed at the same camp as Pfc. Herman Singleton of Cedar Lake, and Jack said that they both enjoyed his Lowell Tribune every time one arrived. He will leave July 6th for California to report for duty.This March 15, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 6, column 2:
- The hospital chapel at Hammer Field, Fresno, was the setting Monday afternoon, March 5th, for the marriage of Miss Marie Largent and Sgt. Jackson H. McCann. The double ring ceremony was performed by Chaplain Henry I. Lyon. "Because" and "I Love You Truly" were played by the post organist.
- The couple were attended by Pvt. Charles Bigam and the bride's sister, Miss Edna Sue Largent.
- The bride chose for her wedding an attractive street dress of powder blue silk crepe with which she wore white accessories. Her corsage was of red rosebuds.
- Miss Largent was attired in a pastel pink two-piece dress. Her accessories were white and her corsage was of white carnations.
- Following the ceremony a reception was held in one of the ward rooms at the hospital where Sgt. McCann had been a patient for several weeks. A large number of patients, members of the hospital staff, friends and relatives were present to greet the young couple. Cake and ice cream were served and a gift was presented to the bride and groom on behalf of the patients in the ward.
- Mrs. McCann is the daughter of Mrs. Sadie Largent of Fowler. She attended the Fowler high school and following her graduation last year has been employed as a window decorator by a large Fresno department store.
- Sgt. McCann is the son of Mr. and Mrs Harold McCann of Lowell, Ind. He attended schools in Lowell and enlisted in the service three years ago. He has been stationed at Hammer Field since his recent return from 28 months of overseas service.
- The couple will live in Sacramento, where Sgt. McCann has been transferred to McClelland Field. --
- The Fowler (Calif.) Ensign.
- Jack's many friends here at home will join us in extending congratulations and best wishes.
A July 26, 1945, Lowell Tribune article found on page 2, column 1 listed several servicemen who were home, among them, Sgt. Jack McCann, home from California. Another article in the same issue of the paper (page 3, column 1) tells more of his visit:
- Sgt. Jackson McCann and wife, of Sacramento, Calif., arrived here Saturday for a visit with his father, Harold McCann and wife, his brother Robert, home on furlough, and his grandfather, Frank Strickland, Sr. Jack, overseas for 28 months, is now with the communications service at Sacramento.
This August 2, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5, column 4:
- Open house was held by the Harold McCanns last week when all their children except S 1/c Fred McCann, in the Pacific, were able to come home. Sgt. Robert McCann came from Arizona, S/Sgt. Jack McCann and wife from California, Pfc. James Kuntz from overseas, Pfc. Bob Kuntz from the south, and Mrs. Grant Bellinger and husband, came from Walkerton, Ind., to enjoy the occasion.
This November 1, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- McClellan Field, Calif. -- Sgt. Jackson H. McCann of Lowell, is a civilian again today following his discharge at this army separation point after nearly 4 years of service with the army air forces.
- He was overseas in the Carribean theater with the 316th Service group as a wire chief from Feb. 1942 to June 1944.
- He is the son of Harold McCann.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the August 8, 1946, issue (page 7, column 2):
- A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jack McCann of Sacramento, Calif. July 27th. Mr. McCann, a son of Harold McCann of Lowell, has been living in California the past few months following his discharge from the army.
