Mary Jeanette Pearce Buchanan (1845-1924)

Mary Jeanette Pearce Buchanan (1845-1924)
(Mrs. William Thomas Buchanan)

The following unidentified newspaper article was in a collection owned by Lowell Town Historian Richard Schmal:
Mary Janette Pearce was born December 17, 1845, the fourth of ten children of Michael and Margaret Pearce, pioneers of Eagle Creek Township.

Early in life she developed an interest in educational work and for several years taught in the township schools. She was married March 21, 1872, to William Thomas Buchanan, of Hebron, Ind., and following the precedent set by her older brothers and sisters immediately settled on a farm in the vicinity of the Pearce homestead, where she resided, with the exception of about one year, until the close of her life.

Reared in the protestant faith she joined the United Presbyterian church at Hebron in her girlhood and was a member of this congregation for more than a half century.

Of her immediate family two have preceded her, a daughter, Margaret R. Buchanan, on March 10, 1919, and her husband on May 29, 1920. A daughter, Ina V. Johnson, and a son, Albert D. Buchanan, remain to mourn her decease.

She departed from this life March 12, 1924, aged seventy eight years, two months and twenty five days.

Funeral services were held at the home Saturday at 2 p.m. Rev. Aiken, pastor of the United Presbyterian church of Hebron, preached the funeral sermon. Interment was made in the Hebron cemetery. There was a large attendance of old friends and neighbors at the funeral service to pay their last respects to a lady they had loved and respected in life.
