Dr. Achilles Davis (1874-1920)
- Dr. Achilles Davis, son of Dr. John E. and Marietta Davis, was born in Lowell, Ind., September 27, 1874. He grew to young manhood in Lowell and after graduating from the Lowell high school he entered the Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill. Finishing there he entered the Northwestern Medical college from which he graduated in 1899. He practiced his profession of physician and surgeon in Chicago, having a large list of patients both in and out of the city. When this country went to war with Germany he entered the medical branch of the service and was commissioned as a Captain. Dr. Davis was a man who bore the esteem and respect of all who knew him and his death will be mourned by a large circle of friends outside the immediate family.
In January 1906 he was united in marriage to Miss Ella Baker, who survives him. He passed away in the early morning of May 3, 1920, having lived 45years, 7 months and 6 days. His wife, his mother, two brothers, Judson and William, mourn his departure.
The following resolutions were adopted by the members of the staff of Wesley hospital, Chicago:
Whereas: Dr. Achilles Davis has been taken from us and we, the members of the staff of Wesley Memorial Hospital, desire herewith to express publicly and officially our sense of great bereavement.
We feel that in the death of out colleague, the hospital has been deprived of a staunch and faithful champion, the community of a conscientious and tireless guardian, while science has lost a zealous and most energetic votary.
But in addition these qualities of civic and professional efficiency which also belong to the world at large, we, the Staff, desire to record our own feeling of keen personal affliction. We have lost [our] dear, wise, counselor, our thoughtful and considerate associate, our generous and loyal friend.
We wish further to convey to those who were nearest and dearest to him, -- and therefore have the heaviest burden, -- the assurance of our profound appreciation and sympathy in their infinite grief.
May his lofty and aspiring soul find peace.
Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. J.E. Davis, mother of the deceased. The services were attended by a large concourse of friends and relatives, who loved the doctor in life. The tenants of the doctor's farm in Missouri were among those in attendance. Between forty and fifty doctors and nurses from Chicago came down. Many of his former patients from Chicago and other places attended.
Rev. C.A. Brown, assisted by Rev. Houser, conducted the funeral services. Mrs. S.C. Dwyer played several instrumental selections on the piano. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful, all sent by loving friends. Interment was made in the Lowell cemetery. Undertaker William Sheets had charge of the burial. The following were active pall-bearers: E.S. Gilmore, C.P. King, Dr. William Miller, Dr. M.R. Chase, Dr. T.P. O'Connor, Dr. C.W. Rausenbach, all of Chicago. The honorary pall-bearers were Dr. J.W. Iddings, Dr. W.C. Quincy, Dr. B.M. Jewell, Dr. Franklin Petry, Dr. P.L. Rigg, Dr. J.A. Dinwiddie, of Lowell.
We extend to the bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy in their hour of sorrow.
