Elsie A. “Eley” Craft Dickinson Thomas (1830-1899)

Elsie A. "Eley" Craft Dickinson Thomas (1830-1899)
(Mrs. Charles Dickinson; Mrs. Eugene Thomas)

The following undated, unidentified newspaper articles were found in a copy of Helen Craft's Scrapbook at the Lowell Public Library:
Mrs. Eugene Thomas died at her home one and a half miles east of Lowell at 2 o'clock a.m., Tuesday March 14, 1899. Funeral was held at Orchard Grove 2 o'clock p.m., March 15, Rev. Bruce officiating. Eley A. Craft was born June 15, 1830 at Fredericktown, Knox county, Ohio, and came with her parents David and Charlotte Craft to Lake county, Ind., in 1855. Was married to Charles Dickinson in 1857. To this union three children -- Warren W., Barton, and Aletha -- were born. Mr. Dickinson died in 1864. She was again married in 1866 to Eugene L. Thomas. To this union two children -- Minnie L. and Oren E. -- were born. All of these survive her. While living in Ohio she united with the M.E. Church. Of her life it can truthfully be said "Those who knew her best loved her most." "She looked well to the ways of her household and ate not the bread of idleness. Let her own works praise her in the gates." Her children and step children were all at the funeral. Those from a distance being: Mrs. Addie Bell and daughters and O.D. Fuller and son of Knox, Indiana; Mr. and Mrs. Will Groshans and Spencer Thoms [sic?] of Hamlet, Indiana; Mr. and Mrs. John Baker of Hebron, Indiana; Mr. and Mrs. Bart Dickinson and Oscar Thomas of Crown Point, Indiana. She leaves a husband and five children; one sister -- Mrs. Clarinda Wiley, of Lowell; one brother -- Thomas Craft, of Orchard Grove; together with many relatives and friends to mourn her loss. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all.
