Frederick "Fred" Bowe (1821-1906)
- Fred Bowe brought a couple of fine melons into our office the other day.
The following unidentified newspaper article was in a collection owned by Lowell Town Historian Richard Schmal:
- Frederick Bowe was born in Chautauqua Co., New York, Feb. 14, 1821, and died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Moyer at 5 a.m. Monday December 3, 1906, at the advanced age of 85 years, 9 months and 19 days. He was twice married, no children being born to either marriage. His first wife was Mrs. Mary Wallace nee Smith to whom he was married December 3, 1846. December 23, 1894, he was called upon to part with her in death. He was again married to Mrs. Sarah Shaver who also preceded him to the great beyond. He with his wife came to Lowell in the spring of 1863, where he engaged for several years in the mercantile business. He afterwards bought the Ben Fuller farm northeast of Lowell now owned by J.W. Lilly and followed farming until he sold his farm to the late Dr. Bacon after which he moved to Lowell where he has since resided with the exception of the past nine months. He was a man of quiet disposition and was honest in his dealings with his fellow man. For the past four or five years he has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Moyer who took good care of him and in his last sickness did everything in the way of care and good medical attendance to alleviate his suffering. With his death the name of Bowe of that branch of the family passes out of existence; he having no nearer relatives than cousins, our Frank Slayton being one. His other relatives reside in York State, Ill. and Kansas. His funeral occurred from the Christian Church, Lowell, of which organization he was a member, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. T.W. Harlow preached a very able discourse. The burial was in charge of Funeral director John Castle. G.S. Clark, Albert Chapman, J.M. Castle, E.S. Clark, M.J. Sanders, Orren Dewitt acted as pall bearers. Interment beside his first wife in the Lowell Cemetery.
