James Wallace Handley (1858-1935)

James Wallace Handley (1858-1935)

A copy of the following unidentified newspaper article, hand-dated July 14th, 1935, was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

    JAMES HANLEY* DIED SUNDAY

    James Wallace Hanley, age 76 years, died Sunday morning at his home, one mile north of Kouts. He had been ill for several years with complication of diseases.

    The decedent was born near Lowell, Ind., on August 5, 1858, a son of Jacob* and Susan (Spaulding) Hanley.

    He was united in marriage to Sarah McGinnis more than fifty years ago. To this union were born the following children who survive as follows: Charles of Detroit, Mich.; John of Gary, Ind.; Earl at home; Mrs. Mary Conrad of Medaryville, Ind.; Mrs. Grace Williams of Chicago, and Earl at home.

    Memorial services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Presbyterian Church in Kouts, conducted by Rev. Armstrong. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery, west of Kouts.

* NOTES

  • Although the name in the article's title was "James Hanley, it was on the same page as other articles about the Handley family, and the name "Handley" was handwritten on the article as well as the notation: "Always called Wallace."
  • This article lists Jacob Handley and Susan (Spaulding) Handley as the parents of James Wallace Handley. The obituary of an Isaac Handley, however, lists Susan Spaulding as his wife and a "Wallace" from Kouts as their son. The obituary of Susan Handley also lists her husband's name as "Isaac

    " rather than as "Jacob."
