Memorial Services for Lew Shurte
Lewis W. Shurte, 63, passed away at Gary Mercy hospital on Saturday, September 4th, where he had been hospitalized for the treatment of serious burns sustained in accident as he ignited rubbish.Born in Lowell in June 27th, 1891, the son of Franklin and Elizabeth Griesel Shurte, Lew was a lifetime resident here. He operated a creamery and a cream route before establishing his fox farm, east of town, about 32 years ago. Lew, however, will always be remembered for his ability to pitch baseball, left handed. Playing with Lowell's fast teams of 1912-14, Lew was recognized as good material and on several occasions was offered semi-pro opportunities, but he preferred to stay here, so he could hunt and fish.
Lew was a member of the Indian Trail Grange and the Conservation club, and once held membership in the Lowell K of P, and Masonic lodges.
His parents and two brothers, John and Will, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, the former Vernal Kelsey; one daughter, Miss Marcia Shurte, and one sister, Mrs. Hazel Fuller of Lowell.
Memorial services were held at 2 o'clock Tuesday, September 7, in the Weaver funeral home with Rev. Harold Hotchkiss, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Interment was in the Lowell cemetery
