This November 15, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- Harlingen Army Air Field, Texas -- Pvt. Robert W. Atkinson of Lowell, Ind., began his nine-week basic training program here today.
- This course consists of instructions in first aid, map and photo reading, close-order drill, military discipline and camouflage. Instructions in the use of the carbine and other small arms will be given. Forty hours of physical training and four-day bivouac.
- Pvt. Charles W. McKinney, Jr., of Rural Route 2, Lowell, also began his nine-week basic training period at the same air field last week.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the May 30, 1946, issue (page 5, column 5):
- Pvt. Robert Atkinson has returned to camp at Clovis, N.M., after spending two weeks at home here with his sisters, Phyllis, Sally and Mary, and grandmother, Mrs. Hattie King.
