DARIUS SMITH PASSES AWAY
Darius Smith, who has been in poor health for some time, passed away at his home near Sherburnville Sunday. He was well known in this section. Funeral services were held at the Sherburnville church yesterday afternoon and interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church.This March 1, 1934, Lowell Tribune obituary appeared on page 3, column 2:
- Darius Smith, son of John and Jane (Britton) Smith, was born on August 18, 1868, and died at his home in Sherburnville, February 12, 1934, at the age of 64 years, 5 months and 24 days. He was the seventh child of a family of ten children, six having preceded him in death. At an early age he united with the Christian church of which he was a faithful and consistent member.
On December 23, 1903, he was united in marriage to Edna Dickey.
Mr. Smith was a good neighbor always willing to help when called upon and was a kind and loving husband. He is survived by his wife, and two step-daughters, Grace Ayers, of Gary, Ind., and Eunice Dickey, at home; his three sisters, Mary Dickey, of Riverside, Calif., Sarah Chamberlain, of Bakerfield, Calif., and Alma Baechler, of Grant Park, Ill., and two step grandsons, Veryl Ponto, who lives at home, and Maurice Ponto, who with his wife and little daughter Eloise Ann, live at Oak Forrest, together with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Sherburnville Christian church Wednesday afternoon, February 14, Minister J.E. Poer, of the Lowell Christian church, officiating. Musical numbers were rendered by Otto Dahl and two daughters, accompanied by Miss Harriett Wason. The pall bearers were the following nephews -- Harold and Harry Smith, Clifford Baechler, and Grant, Clarence and Glen Zartman.

Guy Ayers and Mr. and Mrs. James Bevans, of Gary; Elmer Stowell, of Merrillville; Richard Zartman and sons, Grant, Glen and Clarence, of Galveston, Ind.; Leo Smith and Will Cox of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Dyer, and Frank Saltzgiver, of Kankakee, Ill.; Ray Hale of Martinton, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. William Morey, Neil Smith, Mrs. Otto Childress, Mrs. William Black, Mrs. H.S. Love, Mrs. Leroy Kelsey, Claude Ponto, Lewellyn Smith, of Lowell; Mr. and Mrs. Leon Grimes, of Chicago Heights.
