Jerry Steward Claims Hammond Girl as Bride

The First Methodist church of Hammond was the scene of an impressive candelight service on Saturday, October 24, 1959 at 7:00 p.m. when Miss Kay Sanger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sanger of 921 Drackert Street, Hammond, became the bride of Jerry Steward, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Steward of Lowell.

The Rev. Eugene Balsley officiated as the young couple exchanged rings and pledged their matrimonial vows before an altar adorned with arrangements of chrysanthemums and Fuji mums. "Because" and "The Lord's Prayer" were rendered by Tom Doolin, the soloist.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride was radiant in a floor length gown fashioned of mira-mist taffeta. The fitted bodice featured a scoop neckline, enhanced by cascades of re-embroidered Alencon lace encrusted with seed pearls and sequins and long, tapered sleeves. A lace headpiece accented by seed pearls secured her two-tiered veil of illusion and she carried a bouquet of white orchids and stephanotis.

The bride's sister, Mrs. Denzil Sanders, attended as matron of honor and Mrs. Thomas Jacobs served as bridesmaid. They appeared in street length gowns of romance blue satin with matching bandeaus and blusher veils. They carried cascade arrangements of American Beauty roses.

Paul Steward, brother of the groom served as best man and the ushers were Jerry Sund and Denzil Sanders.

A reception was held at the Carpenter's Hall immediately following the ceremony.

The bride's mother selected a dress of blue crepe with black accessories and Mrs. Steward appeared in a dress of beige lace with beige accessories. Both mothers were the recipients of lovely white orchid corsages. Honored guests included the bride's grandfather, Fred Sanger and the groom's grandmothers, Mrs. Harry Steward and Mrs. Leslie Chase, all of Lowell. Mrs. Steward, Mrs. Chase, and other special guests were honored with corsages of white carnations. Out of town guests attended the wedding from Bass Lake, Iowa City, Monon and the Calumet region.

The bride selected a cocoa brown jersey dress accented by tan accessories for honeymoon travel to Florida.

The new Mrs. Steward is a graduate of Hammond high school and was formerly employed as a dental assistant. Mr. Steward, a graduate of Lowell high school, is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and presently manages Stewards' Sinclair station located at the north junction of U.S. 41 and State road 2.

The newlyweds will reside at the Lincolnwood Apartments in Lowell when they return from honeymoon travel.
