Lewis Henry "Harry" Steward, Sr. (1875-1948)
The following January 6, 1949, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 4, column 3:
- Lewis Henry Steward, son of Levi and Mary Elizabeth Steward, was born in Fremont, Ohio, July 23, 1875, and departed this life at his home in Lowell, Indiana, Dec. 31, 1948, at the age of 73 years, 6 months and 8 days. On March 22nd, 1903, he was united in marriage to Dessie Francis Chitwood, they making their home in Chicago for the following 18 years. To this union were born six sons. The first of the six were twins, dying in infancy. The next older son, Harry, Jr., dying at the age of 18 on January 24, 1924. *
Mr. Steward leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife, Dessie of Lowell, his three sons, Roger, of Lubbock, Texas, Glenn of Lowell and Roy who is serving in the U.S. Air Force at Perrin Field, Sherman, Texas, and their wives, also three grandsons and one granddaughter, one sister, Inez Elizabeth Mullinix* of Lake Village, Indiana, one cousin, Herman Steward of Calumet City, Ill., a host of friends and neighbors.
After the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Steward he was employed by the New York Central Railroad where he served faithfully until he was honorably retired in the year of 1940. Mr. Steward suffered a stroke August 20, 1945, and has been in poor health since that time. He was a very industrious man of jovial disposition and made friends readily wherever he went. He will be greatly missed by his neighbors and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 2nd, 1949, at 2 p.m. from the Weaver Funeral home, E.L. Worley, minister in charge. Burial was in the Lowell cemetery in charge of Weaver and Son.
