The following July 19, 1917, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 4, column 4:
- Harry Steward who is visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Tilton, was quite badly hurt Sunday by being struck in the head with a base ball bat. He was unconscious for some time, but is now getting better.
The following obituary was found in Lowell Public Library clipping files (LH--Vital Statistics, vol. 2, page 94) and was hand dated and identified as being from the Jan. 31, 1924, Lowell Tribune:
- Harry Steward, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Steward, who was working in Chicago, was suddenly taken ill on last Wednesday. His trouble was found to be appendicitis and he was taken to a hospital at once and an operation was performed. He was thought to be getting along all right, but on Monday he was taken worse and died in a few hours. His remains were brought to Lowell Tuesday evening. Funeral services will be held at the Christian church today (Thursday) at 2 p.m.
The following obituary was found in Lowell Public Library clipping files (LH--Vital Statistics, vol. 4, page 47) and was hand dated and identified as being from the Feb. 7, 1924, Lowell Tribune:
- Harry Lewis Steward, son of Lewis Henry and Dessie (Chitwood) Steward, born September 21, 1905, in Chicago, Ill., passed away January 28, 1924, aged 18 years, 4 months and 7 days, after a short illness of only five days, with appendicitis at the Swedish Hospital, Chicago, Ill.
Besides his father and mother he leaves three younger brothers, Roger, Glenn and Roy; an aunt, Mrs. W.W. Mullinix, of Kansas City, Mo.; an uncle, James H. Brannock, grandmother, Mrs. Florence Chitwood, and aunt, Mrs. Edmond Worley, of Lowell; and a host of other relatives and friends who will mourn the loss of a most loving and congenial companion. He was graduated from the William Harper School, Chicago, June 27, 1919, from grade school, and entered Lowell High school in September 1919, graduating May 18, 1923. At the age of 16, he united with the Christian church, and was baptized March 27, 1921. That same year he was elected President of the Christian Endeavor; he was re-elected in 1923, but resigned before his term expired as he thought he would not be able to give the attention to the work that would be required of him, in that place.
About November 1, 1923, he went to Chicago, and was working for the International Indemnity Casuality [sic] Co., when he was taken ill. In the short time that he was with the company, his frank, cordial manner had won him some very warm friends with his fellow workers.
The companions that have had to part with so dear a friend will always remember his loving smile, which was always their greeting, and his parents have this blessing to console them, that Harry was a good, kind, loving obedient son.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church Thursday at 2 p.m. Rev. C.A. Brown, pastor of the M.E. Church, assisted by Rev. Fred Gibson, pastor of the Christian church, conducted the funeral service. The church was filled to capacity by sorrowing relatives and friends. The high school dismissed school for the afternoon and attended the funeral in a body. Interment was made in the Lowell cemetery. Undertaker Weaver had charge of the burial service. The following members of the class of 23 were pall-bearers: Leslie Bruce, Fabian Henry, Neil Bahr, Elton Little and Harold Sanger. The following members of his class acted as flower girls: Helen Vinnedge, Flaey Sanger, Fondelete Rumsey, Helen Schilling, Sylvia Rudolph and Madeline Gordon.
The following from out of town attended the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Levi Steward and son Roy, Mrs. John McDonald, Mrs. David Kincaid, Mrs. Albert Dorchler, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Snyder, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Tatman, E. Calloun, Mrs. George Pryum, of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Steward and daughter Ethel, Mrs. Arthur Steward, Lee and Will Dickinson, Alonzo Dickinson, of Hammond; Mrs. Robert Grosby of Ladoga, Ind.; Mrs. W.W. McGee, of Geneva, Ohio; Vera and Ruby Johnson, Rex Frazier, of South Bend.
