The following February 4, 1943, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 3:

    DINNER PARTY HELD IN HONOR OF ROBERT CULLEN

    In honor of their son, Bob, who leaves in a short time for naval duty, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cullen invited a number of his friends to the Cullen home Wednesday of last week for a dinner party and an evening together.

    Present for the evening's festivities and dinner were: Tom Combs, "Spud" Schwanke, Bob Tempske, Jack Weaver, Dick Pear, Bob Hathaway, Mrs. Florence Pear and Mr. and Mrs. Byron McCarthy.

The following February 11, 1943, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2 column 3:

    Enrolled as Apprentice Seaman

    Robert F. Cullen, Jr., went to Great Lakes training station last Saturday, where he is now enrolled as an apprentice seaman. He will take his basic training there and later will be sent to a regular station.
This March 4, 1943, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 2:

    Bob Cullen, Jr. at Great Lakes

    Great Lakes, Ill.-- Now serving in the U.S. navy, Robert Cullen, Jr., 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cullen, Lowell, reported to the U.S. naval training station here last week to begin several weeks basic training.

    During his period of recruit training here the new Bluejacket will be physically conditioned through participation in the navy's vigorous physical toughening program. He will learn the fundamentals of seamanship and naval procedure, and be given a series of aptitude tests to determine the type of work to which he will be assigned.

The following article was found in the April 29, 1943, Lowell Tribune on page 2, column 1:
    A. S. Robert Cullen, Jr., has been home the past week for a visit with his parents, the Robert Cullens. Bob has completed his "boot" training and will soon be sent to some other base.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the May 11, 1944, issue (page 2, column 2):
    The first letter in over a month was received by the Robert Cullens this week from their son, Robert Cullen, Jr., Ph.M 3/c, with the U.S. Navy somewhere near Italy. Bob said he had been on the move recently--in North Africa, Sicily, and now in Italy. He said the American people should keep on producing, because in the opinion of the boys over there, the war was nowhere near over yet. He was feeling well and getting along fine at the time of writing.
The following June 1, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:

    Meets Former Teacher in Italy

    A letter from Robert Cullen, Jr., Ph.M.3/c to his parents, the Robert Cullens, tells them that his ship anchored at a port in Italy a short time ago, and that when the Red Cross came aboard with doughnuts for the crew members he was certainly surprised when he discovered Miss Helen Beko, his former history teacher at L.H.S., was one of them. Bob said they had an enjoyable visit.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the March 14, 1946, issue (page 2, column 1):
    The following local boys have received their discharges from the navy the past week: Robert F. Cullen, PH M 3/c; Roger E. Brown, AET M 3/c; Thomas R. Combs, PH, M 2/c; and Robert Surprise, SOM 2/c.
