On August 28th, 1915, the descendents of Nehemiah and Harriet to the number of three hundred or over gathered at the old Hayden Homestead at West Creek, Lake County, Indiana, to see what could be done about having an annual reunion of the Hayden family. It was a very enthusiastic meeting. A permanent organization was formed, and the following were elected to office:

The day was spent in getting acquainted, and a social time was enjoyed by all present; a beautiful dinner was served at noon. A feature of the afternoon was a family group taken by Mr. Kilmer, Photographer of Crown Point, Ind. The afternoon passed all too quickly, and the day was voted a success by all. As the shadows began to lengthen we departed for out respective homes, hoping to meet again on Aug. 26, 1916.

The following unidentified newspaper article was in a collection owned by Lowell Town Historian Richard Schmal:
Nehemiah Hayden, the honored ancestor of all the Hayden families scattered over this country, was born in New Jersey, October 27, 1790.* He is described as being not a large man, but full of vigor. He possessed many good traits of character that his descendants are generally noted for, among them being honesty, industry and good citizenship. His wife, Harriet, was born in New Jersey also. They were married and moved to Knox county, Ohio, and later to Lake county, Ind., near West Creek in 1837 where they established a home and a place in the world. The wife died in 1847, April 28*, at the age of 45 years. Mr. Hayden died April 20, 1856.*
They had a large family, consisting of nine sons and five daughters. The sons of Nehemish were Daniel, Andrew, Jacob, John, Joseph, Edgar, Cyrus, Lewis and William; the daughters, Mrs. Reece Kile, Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Volney Dickey, Mrs. Hathaway and Mrs. Smith. The children grew up and most of them settled in the vicinity of Sherburnville, and the family has always held a place among the best people.
There were present at the reunion 303 of the descendants of the honored Nehemiah, and they enjoyed the blessings of the country handed down to them. A bountiful dinner, amounting almost to a barbecue, was served, and the enjoyment was apparent in each countenance. Cyrus Hayden Jr. made an address, and they spent the day visiting and relating experiences of the past. Among the older ones present were Cyrus Hayden Sr., Wm. Hayden and Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, the latter being 74 years old, the oldest present.
The following officers were elected: Cyrus Hayden Sr., Lowell, President; Cyrus Hayden Jr. of Crown Point, Vice-President; C.J. Hayden, Grant Park, Secretary and Treasurer; Thuel Hayden, Lowell, Cor. Sec'y.
They decided to hold the meeting at the same place on the last Saturday in August in 1916.
[* NOTE -- Nehemiah Hayden's birth and death dates, as well as his wife's death date, are listed differently in other places. The West Creek Cemetery Index at the Lowell Public Library lists Nehemiah's life span as 1800-1856 and his wife Harriet's as 1802-1847. In Richard Schmal's "Pioneer History" column from Nov. 1980, Nehemiah Hayden's birth/death dates were listed as Oct. 27, 1798 to 1857, and his wife Harriet's were listed as 1802 to Apr. 16, 1847.]
On Aug. 26, 1916, the members of the Hayden families met at the Old Hayden Homestead for their second reunion. The day was spent in the usual way: in a social way by the older people, with games and sports for the young people. The Lowell Boys Band played at intervals during the day, and the music was enjoyed by all present. Letters of regret were read from absent members and all weddings, deaths and births were supposed to have been reported to the Sec., but as but few were handed in, I do not think there was a complete understanding in regard to it. Those elected to office were:

After dinner a short business meeting was held, the following officers being elected for the coming year: Cyrus Hayden, of Lowell, President; Murray B. Hayden, Vice-president; Miss* Alice Smith, Secretary and Treasurer; Thuel A. Hayden, Corresponding Secretary.
The Lowell Boys' Band furnished music during the day, which the writer can truthfully say was appreciated by all, nothing but praise was heard for the boys.

The horse race was won by Minor Collins.
At a late hour all departed for their respective homes, hoping that they may have the privilege of meeting again next year on the last Saturday in August.

On Aug. 25th, 1917, the third annual Hayden reunion was held at Oakland Park, Lowell, Ind. There were not as many present in the forenoon. But in the afternoon a large number were in attendance. Those coming from a distance were Mr. & Mrs. Charles Hayhurst and children Dorothy and Keith of Altousa, Kansas, also Mr. & Mrs. Robert Hayden of Providence Forge and Miss Hattie Hayden of Norfolk, Virginia. The day was spent in the usual way. An impromptu programme was gotten up in the afternoon. Mr. J. Burns of Coldwater, Mich., gave a reading and sang "Our Flag," which was highly applauded. The Misses Doris Clark and Vera Smith each gave a reading. Mrs. Martha Hayhurst gave a few pleasing remarks. Cyrus Hayden, Junior, in his genial pleasing manner gave a talk that made us all feel glad that we belong to the Hayden reunion.
Another pleasing feature of the afternoon enjoyment was the carving of a watermelon that weighted 40 pounds that was brought from Virginia by Mr. Robert Hayden. We that were fortunate enough to get a bite thought it tasted just like more. At the Business Session the officers were elected to serve another year.

This Aug. 30, 1917, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 1, column 3:
The relatives began to arrive at an early hour and at noon when the tables were spread there were about 250 to partake of the good things. After dinner a business meeting was held, and the following officers were elected: President, Cyrus Hayden; Vice President, Murray B. Hayden; Secretary and Treasurer, Mrs. Alice Smith; Corresponding Secretary, T.A. Hayden. After attending to a number of things pertaining to the welfare of the organization, it was voted to hold the next reunion on the last Sunday in August, 1918, hoping by so doing to give every member of the family a chance to meet with the clan.
Cyrus Hayden, Jr., then entertained the bunch in well chosen words, speaking of those members of the family who have departed this life since the last meeting in 1916. Miss Vera Smith and Doris Clark each gave a reading. J.T. Burns spoke and sang praises for the stars and stripes.
Many different states were represented, Indiana and Illinois, of course, taking the lead. Kansas was represented by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hayhurst and children, Dorothy and Keith. Pennsylvania was represented by Mrs. J.C. Parmley and children, Oliver and Marjorie. Virginia by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hayden and daughter, Hattie. Michigan by Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Burns.
It was an ideal day for the reunion and judging from the appearance of everything in general everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
At a late hour all departed for home, hoping to meet again in 1918.

OFFICE | NAME |
President | Merritt Hayden |

It was decided not necessary to take up a collection this year. Pres. suggested holding next reunion at Sherburnville because that was the home of so many of the older ones; a motion was made & carried to that effect.
There were 8 births, 9 marriages, 3 deaths reported. It was suggested a member from each family be selected to make a report to the sec'y of all births, deaths & marriages. The meeting then adjourned to meet next year on the Sunday preceding Labor Day as has been the custom, at Sherburnville, Ill., and make it not only a reunion but a home coming as well. The rest of the afternoon was enjoyed visiting and playing ball. We were very pleased to have with us Mr. & Mrs. Claud Clark from Boynton, Okla., who haven't been able to attend for so many years.

The eighteenth Hayden reunion was held at Sherburnville Sept. 4th with the largest attendance for several years. A cafeteria dinner was held in the community hall after which about 225 registered. Some of the younger men went to the ball diamond and enjoyed an exciting game of kitten ball while the rest of the clan went to the church and enjoyed the following program with the president Merritt Hayden presiding:
Music by Russel Bradshaw & Wanita Smith
Reading by Velma Pemble
Vocal solo by Nelda Knisley
Vocal solo by Wanita Smith
Reading by Vera Minninger
Vocal duet by Nelda Knisley & Wanita Smith
Talk by Rueben Hess of Kentland, Ind., relating some of a village
schoolmaster's experiences as he saw them about 35 years ago when he
served in that capacity at Sherburnville and neighboring schools and had
for his pupils a great many members of this clan. This was very much
enjoyed.
Thuel Hayden introduced Mr. Clarence Hayden from Chicago who with his brother Mr. Wallace Hayden had come for the purpose of finding some connection between our family and their family. He gave a very interesting talk on how they have traced their linage back to the year 1630 and have helped other Hayden lines do the same. We are hoping to find that connecting link sometime.
The secretary reported 23 births of which there are three sets of twins, 7 marriages and 6 deaths. A bill of $5.39 was paid to cover the expenses of the day. A motion was made and carried to hold the reunion next year at the same place with the same officers retained. Meeting adjourned with everyone feeling Merritt and his assistants had made the home coming a success in every way.

[Yes, 1934 was the year written on the last death entry. This record was also entered in the 21st (1934) reunion records.]
The nineteenth Hayden reunion was held at Sherburnville Sept. 3 with the usual large attendance. The weather was fine and about 1 o'clock a wonderful dinner was served cafeteria [style] to which every one present did justice. Games of ping-pong, horse-shoe and kitten-ball were enjoyed by young and old while an overflowing crowd filled the church to hear the good program which had been prepared. The main feature of this entertainment was the orchestra composed entirely with one exception of Hayden descendants, namely Glen Love, leader; grace Love, pianist; other instruments: Ruth Hathaway, Hattie Gorball, Ethel Love, Verna Childress, Gerald Alger, Gladys Gorball, Martha Jean Hathaway, Jeanette Dahl, Phyllis Bailey, Harriet Wason, Oliver Parmely and Marjorie Parmely. After they were introduced and had given several fine selections the president opened the meeting by thanking everyone who had helped with the day's program and urged everyone to come next year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the clan, then called on Judge Strickland for a talk, who having spent almost his entire life among the clan takes a keen interest in them. Other numbers on the program were recitations by Dorothy Hathaway (in costume), Garneta Diss and Donna Hayden; vocal solo by Wanita Smith.
The business part of the meeting was soon dispensed with by deciding to come to Sherburnville again next year with Merritt Hayden Pres., Harold Smith Vice Pres, Lyrrel Brown Sec'y. A rising note of thanks was given the orchestra when the meeting adjourned and the rest of the day was spent in renewing acquaintances and reminiscing.

[The following newspaper clipping is from an undated and unnamed source. It was pasted in the Hayden Reunion Book]:
The twenty-third annual reunion of the Hayden Clan was held at the Oakland School house in West Creek township on Sunday, September 5. A beautiful day, a splendid place to hold a gathering of this kind, and the spirit of kinship helped to make a new record for attendance. Noted for their art in cookery, the women of the clan had prepared a sumptuous dinner which was served cafeteria style. After dinner the president of the association called the clan to order. Judge Strickland of Hammond, Thuel Hayden and Harriet Love, each gave short talks. Mrs. Hugh Hayden of Hammond sang several songs, and August Hatters gave several accordion numbers all of which was thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd.
Swings, slides, teeter-totters, for the little ones; horse shoes and baseball for the older ones helped to make the afternoon an enjoyable one. The secretary's report showed 22 births, 12 marriages and nine deaths the past year. Two hundred and eight registered as present at the meeting.
The election of officers resulted in the selection of Leroy Hayden, president; Leroy Pattee, vice-president; Loren Love, secretary and treasurer. It was decided to hold the 1938 reunion at the same place, on the Sunday before Labor Day. It was agreed by all present that it was one of the best reunions since the first one, twenty-three years ago. Several states were represented and several visitors joined the gathering, their presence always being warmly welcomed.
At this time there are eight couples who have celebrated their fiftieth or better wedding anniversaries, and if there is any one family in any state that can beat this, they should be heard from.
Mrs. Willie Hayden is only living one of the older generation of fourteen members.
The family record shows that Nehemiah Hayden was born in 1798 and died in 1851. Harriet Kitchell Hayden was born in 1808 and died in 1847.

EVENT MARKED BY UNVEILING OF MARKER AT IMPRESSIVE SERVICE.
The annual reunion of the Hayden Clan was held at the Oakland school, in West Creek township, on Sunday, Sept. 3rd. At one o'clock, the usual number of around 200 sat down to a pot luck dinner, and we can truthfully say the women have kept pace with their ancestors when it comes to plenty of good things to eat.
After dinner, the vice president, Roy Pattee, called the clan to order. The secretary's report showed there had been 20 births and five deaths in the last year. Election of officers for the coming year was as follows:
The secretary's report, after the collection, showed around $39 in the treasury.
At this time the president turned the meeting over to Cyrus Hayden of Crown Point, who had charge of unveiling the marker. This marker is placed where Nehemiah and Harriet Hayden settled over 100 years ago, and where they resided until their death. They were the parents of 14 children which all grew to man and womanhood. All were farmers, the 5 girls marrying farmers. Ten of the farms joined one another and the 4 others lay close to the other farms. Seven of these farms were in Illinois and the other seven were in Indiana. These 14 farms made up a combined acreage of over four thousand acres. No one had to tell them when to reap, mow and sow, in plain words, they all had good horse sense. They were all temperate and were law abiding citizens. They all were lovers of good horses and all kinds of stock. It can truthfully be said that their horses never went out of the barn to work hungry and their families never left the table hungry.
Nehemiah was the grandparent of 87 children, 71 of which grew to maturity, 16 having passed away at an early age. Their oldest son, Daniel, was the father of 13 children, all farmers and all owning farms. Joseph had 9 children of which all are living, the youngest being 64. Jacob, Lewis and Edgar all married sisters. None of the living generation today ever saw their grandparents.
A fine marker was placed on state road 2, 1½ miles east of the State line and ½ mile west of West Creek where our grandparents settled of which we feel proud and we are sure it will be there for many, many generations. We date back 7 generations now from those grandparents. To date we have 6 couples who have celebrated their 50th or better wedding anniversaries, a record we think hard to beat.
Our Grandfather Hayden lived to see only 7 of his 87 grandchildren born. An ox team, 8 children, 75 cents, and what they could put in one wagon were the earthly possessions of Harriet and Nehemiah Hayden when they landed in West Creek Township, Lake Co., Indiana in 1837. We are very sorry we haven't a more complete record of our Grandparents. Their record was their fine home, their well cultivated farms and fine stock. Very few of the third generation ever heard about their grandparents.
Our next reunion will be held at the same place on the same date, the Sunday before Labor Day. Let's all be there for a good time and lots of good eats.
Cyrus Hayden called the clan to order for the dedication of the marker, and the following program was carried out:
[a part of the article seems to be missing here]
The marker was unveiled by 14 small boys and girls, one from each of the 14 families, by each pulling on ribbons of red, white, and blue. The audience then sang "God be with you 'till we meet again," which was followed by benediction by Rev. Hess.
Secretary.
